February 2003
| This month was an incredible month. Beginning with a typical Arkansas spring like February, and ending like a typical northern February. The first Sunday I met Linda for a one-day hike in the Ozark national Forest. It was perfect weather for a hike, the nights are cold enough to freeze water, and the days are clear fresh and sunny. |
| At this time of year the mosses really show off. Your eyes are always attracted to the living green. |
|
Witch Hazel |
| This is a plant that Linda has brought to my attention. It is one or her favorite plants. Here we are, on the second day of February and the witch hazel is blooming. |
| Along the creek the fossils which are common throughout the Ozarks tell their stories in the rocks. |
| Last year the winner was severe, the ice
storm crippled Arkansas. Arkansas winners are mostly mild in comparison to
the north. This year we had a few snowstorms. One storm that we had in
January I was out of town on a job when it hit. It was one of those
snowstorms that piles up quickly. As I was driving home on Hwy 9 I stopped
in the Ouachita National Forest to clean the snow off my windshield that
my wipers had packed up making it hard to see. It was really coming down
fast, and hard to see in the dark snowy night when I started the last 18
mi. home. When all of a sudden coming out of darkness in my headlights is
a wet and cold looking man waiting desperately. He was walking up the
mountain road looking for help. His truck ran off the road and his
pregnant wife and baby were waiting for him to get help. I made room for
him in my truck and we headed off to find his family. We almost missed it
in the snow. His wife was not only pregnant but she had broken her arm in
the accident. I left them in the capable hands of the Paron Fire and
Rescue Department. The biggest storm came in
February. And these pictures are from February. The first three are from
my front yard. |
| The next group of pictures are from the back roads of the Ouachita National Forest. The pictures with the water are of the upper Saline River above Lake Winona. |
| The classic sign of spring crocuses popping out of the snow. Every year I look for the opportunity to take a picture like this. It was a very good February |
