Oh yeah fishing

It was a cool morning when David and I showed up at Ernie's Pond. I took this picture while David was preparing his assault on the lake.

Even though it was cold and drizzly the fish were still biting, I don't remember a May that the fish were not. One thing that was different this year I caught more fish than David. So maybe cold and drizzly is good.

David paddled us parallel to the shore so we could work for early morning fish. David said "look over there it is a Prothonotary warbler". I said "yes I see it is a Protonotaria citrea", no not really I saw a yellow bird going into a dead spur. There was a pair of them. They were taking turns on the nest.

You can see the dead spur to the right of David

David a scientists according to his youngest Jennifer. He is a biologist who I believe would enjoyed being a field biologist more than a rat and chicken sticker. But what else can you do as a biologist in a metropolitan area with millions of people. I guess a field biologist could study the habitats of people with green and purple hair.

you will

This remarkable plant was growing in the water. I took a piece up to the house to see if anyone knew what it was. But nobody knew the name of this plant. Mom went home to Maryland and search for it in her wildflowers of North Carolina book. It is called Leucothoe. I have a piece that I am trying to get started. I'm sure I can find a place in my pond if I can get it routed.

We saw the warbler again. David paddled us up one of the little feeder creeks to get a better view. I was able to get a few good pictures of him. You can see them all by clicking this picture.

Normally David and I fish four ponds when we are there. I guess it was because of the weather that we really only fish two ponds, Ernie's Preacher Ball pond, and Bobby's pond. There are a lot of big fish in both of these ponds. The picture of the bottom right David found a friend.

It is always a pleasure to go to a place with so much family history. No matter how many family members are there it is always nice to drive down the roads of Hickory Rock. On the rare occasions when we have a reunion, and people from all points of the nation gather at the old home place there is nothing finer.
